I'm looking forward to the 2013 season as I continue my recovery from anterior cruciate ligament rebuild.
I should be ready to get out on the rocks in March so that'll be great and probably good timing fishing-wise.

Some match angling with West Cork and District S.A.C helped to keep me busy this year and I was glad that I could complete the competitions given the time I spent on crutches this Autumn. I had never fished all the competitions before usually making only about half of them per season but this year I went for it and was delighted with how I got on in the end. Its amazing what you can accomplish if you apply yourself properly.
The standard is very high in this club and there will be 4 anglers trying to make the Irish International Team in february this year out of the cream of angling talent in the country. That is probably the highest representation from any club in the country at the International fish-offs , so we've had a good year here in Cork.

Derek Kenrick won a Bronze Medal at this years World Team Championships in Holland and was the top scoring Irish angler at the event.
He's also got a Gold Medal from 2010 so I was absolutely over the moon to beat him more times than he beat me this year in our Master Angler Competition. He is so consistent though and always gets his fish, he still easily won 1st place in our league. I certainly won't be suprised if he wins a World Individual title one day.

So I enjoyed my match fishing this year but to me its still doesn't give me as much of a buzz as lure fishing for bass and I can't wait to reacquaint myself with those silver beauties.
The hosts Holland made the most of home advantage to take first place just ahead of Wales, with Alan Price of Wales taking top individual place.
Derek Kenrick of my club West Cork and District was a member of the Irish team who won this competition in 2010. He qualified in the substitute position for this years competition and he certainly did the business for the team when called upon as Dave Roe had to drop out. He had the best placing out of the Irish team finishing a respectable 24th on the individual table. I'm absolutely delighted for him as I'm sure the rest of my club are. Happy days and well done Derek and the rest of the Irish team , the standard of angling has improved enormously in the country over the last few years and it's showing.Danny Wysehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02250212598450996634noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5359809161017631911.post-84563852021261767372012-10-18T00:22:00.000-07:002012-10-18T00:25:13.015-07:00LABRAX CUP 2012The French certainly love their bass fishing . Practice finished today for the 16 competing nations and hopefully the hard work of preparation has been completed by the competing anglers. A good nights sleep and a strong start in the morning at 10:00 will be the wish on everyones mind as I write this.
Most of the teams will have already been to the venues in weeks prior to the event. They will have taken time off work and invested their own money in most cases to fly over, check out the beaches and see what they are up against in terms of logistics, available species and tackle needed. Baits will be supplied by the competition organisers for the match, but all of these will have been scrutinised on the beaches beforehand.
Decisions would have been made that will make or break a teams plan. Hundreds of traces per team will have been tied and tactics discussed and pondered over.
For those competing it will be the culmination of an enormous effort and expense, and an amount of preparation that most anglers could not even contemplate. A level of preparation that has been up-held through qualification aswell as practice and is second nature to those match anglers involved. It really is a case of "fail to prepare , prepare to fail" as no amount of luck will carry you successfully through this competition.

I hope the Championships are a success , that the weather is kind and that there are plenty of fish to keep lads and ladies occupied. But most of all I hope that the Irish team of Martin Howlin , Eugene Farrelly, John O'Brien , Joe Duggan and my local club member Derek Kenrick stay competetive throughout and maybe , just maybe, bring home another Gold by finish on Friday..... GOOD LUCK LADS.
To see the lovely bass that have been caught lately in Cork Harbour check out the Angling Hub blog at the top of my blog list.
The different seasons throughout the year have their own characteristics when it comes to the way in which we like to target our favourite quarry. This time of year is when a lot of anglers are more confident persisting with their larger lures, in the hope of getting a magical double.
Personally I like nothing better than to fish rock marks with a metre or more depth of water and a wave on them. Number one priority is a safe elevated position to fish into the decent swell, with the sun starting to disappear below the horizon the chances are I'd be clipping on a big paddle-tail shad.
Casting out into the big water and retrieving slowly with the rod tip held high, while your minds eye pictures that tail working away as the big lure swims along, does it for me . If you're not bumping off the odd rock on the way back in you're winding too fast. Admittedly its not about technique and finesse, and casting those heavy lures in bad weather might even require heavier than normal tackle. What it does do though, is put a lure that is easier to home-in on into a water that big fish like to hunt in.
Unless I'm fishing dirty water it is generally the only time of year I use shads from the shore. That is just one of my habits but is possibly a bad one and should probably be reviewed?
If it is too shallow a big swell can turn water into a white seething mass which is too dangerous for any self-respecting bass to venture into, so finding the happy medium between depth and swell size is one of the keys to any success that may be had.

It is the anticipation that a big fish might turn up that gets me out in the unpleasant weather. Its a similar feeling to fishing a live mackeral , in the sense that the exciting possibility of being rewarded with a lunker helps with your patience and concentration, and keeps you going. With nerves slightly on edge until that magic moment when your rod buckles over, and as everything goes solid you can tell, by the way the fish stays deep, that you've just hit the jackpot!

Unfortunately my season is on hold at the moment due to some extensive knee surgery. It has been further complicated by a couple of blood clots caused by the lack of activity with the leg. So do me a favour , get out there and catch a big bass for me.

Oh yeah and just incase you were wondering ?...... it was playing football, not scrambling around the rocks, that caused the damage ....if only I'd just stuck to the fishing!Danny Wysehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02250212598450996634noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5359809161017631911.post-62062960162613924752012-09-01T04:33:00.001-07:002012-09-02T02:06:08.687-07:00 Gilthead Protection ?The taking of Gilthead Bream here in Cork continues to be a contentious issue. With many anglers getting angry about the continual killing of breeding sized fish, it is not a good situation.
Here we have a new species that has only been resident since approximately 1998. If treated responsibly a foothold could have been made by these beautiful fish in Irelands inshore zone. A spread of the stock further north around both coasts could have been a reasonable expectation given time and climatic conditions suitable for stock enhancement.
Unfortunately most anglers greedy reaction has been to keep all the fish they catch. Cork harbour had some decent fishing for a season but that didn't last long, I heard 70+ fish a week were getting killed during its heyday.
Whether that figure is accurate doesn't really matter now the frenzied bonanza is history. If so called anglers are that desperate for food I'll have to start a charity on this blog to feed them and save them from ruining their own hobby's future. Its exasperating really ........

It has been mentioned to me the possibility of lobbying for the set up of nursery areas where the taking of gilties could be prohibited.
I and many others would love to see something like that in place , I remember it having a very good impact when similar nursery areas were set up to protect bass in Wales, it is definately food for thought...........How much support an idea like that would get is another matter though, are the bream worth protecting? I don't suppose there is much to be gained financially for the goverment by having a healthy gilthead stock, infact at times it seems bass are hardly worth the effort to conserve judging by the protection they seem to get.
I've been bass fishing here for 15 years now and not once in all that time have I ever been approached by a single fishery officer to check on what I was doing or if I had exceeded my catch limit etc!
Isn't that a bit odd ?,where are the people being paid to safeguard the stocks that are already "protected"? Even though they are underfunded and undermanned surely atleast once in all that time I should have seen one patrol ?

What makes it more annoying for me is, I would actually do it myself on a voluntary basis given the chance and would give some of my spare time to be trained in the proceedures that need to be followed by fishery officers . If I'm acceptable for the Lifeboat/RNLI then why not bass protection?
I'll just have to write to them and see what they say I suppose ? Infact it wouldn't suprise me if some other anglers felt the same either ? I'll bet there is more red tape involved with saving fish than there is with saving people. "Oh no you can't do that", is probably as far as it would get?

Anyway apologies for the ranting lately, its just representative of the feed back I've been receiving through members of my angling club and others anglers who phone or email,so I'm putting it out there.
I shouldn't really be negative about the IFI either as they probably do more than I see or hear about ? Its just frustrating when there is no sign of them around the place. That kind of thing annoys people and is a common complaint I hear.

I'll shut-up now and get back to the fishing.........
Danny Wysehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02250212598450996634noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5359809161017631911.post-82319356724648328142012-08-28T00:32:00.000-07:002012-10-15T14:37:36.974-07:00Thought for food. During the big blow we had recently it was again noticable that Kinsale harbour was devoid of any French and Spanish trawlers sheltering from the weather. There would normally be half a dozen or so of the same boats who have been calling into port for years.
We used to be friends with a crew of French guys and shared pints and laughs through the bad gales over a couple of winters. Unfortunately at Xmas time one year they didn't make it back to port and their boat sank 30 miles offshore with the sad loss of all onboard, I never brought myself to make friends with any other crews since.
Aside from the potential dangers of fishing off Ireland what else is causing the disappearance of foreign trawlers from Irish water?
Oil costs and the poor prices they are getting for their fish back home, due to world recession, have now made it unviable to visit our waters so a lot of foreign boats are just not coming here anymore.
Our own fleet are also finding oil prices are having a major impact on how they fish. The small sandy bays around my local coastline used to get trawled regularly by the inshore fleet "having a look" to see what was about. Nowadays every single tow cost so much in fuel that only the main fishing areas, with a more guaranteed catch return, are seeing any trawling activity.
Ofcourse the benefits of this situation are starting to be felt by anglers with plaice fishing showing big signs of improvement in said bays along with dabs ,codling ,gurnards and other species.

Gill netting has also taken a hit with such a reduced effort out of Kinsale it's practically non existent nowadays. Consequently there has been an explosion in the hake stock off the southwest coast with vast amounts of fish being reported.Cod are supposed to be around in much better numbers aswell but I will wait and see before I start celebrating that news.
I hope the wrecks continue to get a rest from the netters and given time the fishing will improve on them also, those that aren't too broken up or disintegrated anyway.

So a strange silver lining in the clouds that is oil prices , unfortunately no such good news on the shore angling scene .
The local Gilthead population are now being fished to extinction by brainless anglers , and with angling journalists getting in on the action I can only hope and pray I don't see any articles in the media giving away information to other greedy individuals.
Anglers from Dublin were fishing one well known WestCork mark recently and just killed everything they caught, including gilties and schoolies, and all taken from a small sensitive stretch of water. With no small/young giltheads showing anywhere locally it looks like the end of the road for this beautiful and hard fighting species in Cork?
Some Eastern Europeans gangs continue to decimate some areas with a thriving trade being done with their local chinese restaurant , they can be seen on some marks practically fishing/killing around the clock and not a thing being done about it , and the mess! well I better not get started on that one :-(
Probably not the most PC of posts I've written and I apologise if I offend any of you, but I'm just reporting on what I have found is happening in my area , you may be experiencing similar situations where you are?
Danny Wysehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02250212598450996634noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5359809161017631911.post-24371314248968271052012-08-13T03:16:00.001-07:002012-08-13T11:11:31.575-07:00Fishing On-lineI'm back in the 21st century after some computer problems. It feels good to be online again but I didn't really miss it as much as I would have expected........it eats into your fishing time.
If I'd been reading the catch reports of late it might of put me off going bass fishing too. I don't know if we missed a red-tide scenario down here? but we've honestly found fairly consistent fishing this year, weather allowing!
Our worst guided day out of the season produced one bass of around 4lb and two mullet about the same size ,we switched target species in the afternoon as conditions were very weedy on the day. Apart from that trip we've generally been getting between 5-7 bass over a full days guiding . Ok granted its not the big numbers we were finding in 2010 but the fish are still a decent average size and customers have been re-booking so we're pleased enough. The fact that we're not a full-time operation probably helps with consistency, for obvious reasons.
Its the same story with our personal fishing and that of our close friends with fish being found in East (mostly on bait) and West Cork (mostly lures). I think a lot of the guys who are catching fish are just keeping quiet about it , again for obvious reasons. A lot of people want it given to them on a plate and the net has proven a useful tool for gleaning such info. Some of the more popular marks have been getting immense angling pressure because of clues given away in catch reports and I don't think we will be seeing as many posted in future.
Its guys who are putting in the effort who are getting rewards and are just keeping quiet about it . Thats how it appears to me in my immediate circle anyway, apologies if this goes against the grain of others experiences this year but I'm not going to make up poor fishing stories just to fit in with the general consensus.Saying that though , I do feel for anglers who are finding their haunts devoid of fish and hope and pray it is mostly due to the crazy weather that climate change seems to be bringing us, the other possible reasons for a scarcity along the coast are too upsetting to contemplate at this moment (We have netters and spear fishermen here too).No-one complained about the steady bass fishing that was to be found through last winter so hopefully things are just messed up at the moment.
Yeah the weather is unsettled and this always has a detrimental effect on bass fishing which is a shame, but you can't have great seasons without poor ones , its not a computer game.
We all took fish on lures but boy was it cold for the time of year !
Have a read of the Draft Bass Policy , excellent work by all involved. It would be great to see the proposals implemented.
Its a good time to target some of the huge wrasse we have around our coasts over the next month , I just hope it warms up a bit.Danny Wysehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02250212598450996634noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5359809161017631911.post-20802755457539373902012-04-30T03:54:00.003-07:002012-05-02T00:04:34.834-07:00Fertilised eggs blown away.... Whats happened to our prevailing winds? I can't remember a year like it . The southwesterlies we are supposed to get upon our shorelines have been practically non-existent .
The constant off-shore northerlies and northeasterlies have hampered fishing all around the south coast. Match angling has become chronic with 3 or 4 tiddlers winning competitions and even less in some cases!

Bass angling has been patchy and a little uncomfortable in the biting wind, I long for some warmth to lift the spirits.
We'll get over the below-par fishing as soon as the weather improves, its the poor conditions for stock recruitment that I find most disappointing.
If we keep getting this wind direction at this time of year , we could find it having a negative impact on various species including bass.

A lot of the bass in the Cork area seem to have spawned already this season. Instead of warm southwesterlies gently blowing the fertilised eggs towards the shore and into harbours , lagoons and estuaries, where good nursery conditions for the growth of basslings are found , we have a situation where practically the whole of the spring has seen blustery offshore winds driving everything out to sea.
What the survival chances of a bass egg floating miles off the Mizen Head are, I don't know ? My guess is none or very little. Especially given the distance offshore that they might be bobbing about in these 50 kilometres an hour winds.
I'm no scientist but I don't think 2012 is going to be remembered as a successful breeding year .
Lets hope this doesn't become a regular pattern , looking at Windguru and other sites is almost becoming painful.

My prediction in the last post came true as Derek Kenrick a member of WCAD made the Irish International team that will be competing in Holland later this year.
He was a member of the 2010 team that won gold so will be a valuable member of this group.
This years team looks strong and will be more than capable of having a say in the event , good luck to all those involved .
As anyone who has done the secretarial role in an angling club will know the start of the season is a fair amount of work collecting memberships, registering members for IFSA Insurance, entering members in regional qualifiers, writing letters , sending emails, and plenty more, I've even been helping design club clothing this year along with my family. Its definately a commitment that can cut into your fishing time , ironic really!
WCAD isn't a club that is relaxed in its approach to competitions either. With some of the best match anglers in the World (and Gold medals to back that up) , Irish internationals and team captain, Munster champions numerous times over to name but a few accolades, its just not your average club.
Getting a lucky match win is not going to happen, you will have to work your socks off to have any chance of being competitive . Personally I've started well this year in the club but I don't expect to make the top three by the end of the season, infact I would be delighted with 4th !
Many decent anglers including internationals have left to join "easier" clubs because they just can't compete with the quality they're up against over a season. They can find easier routes to the Master Angler elsewhere and I don't blame them one bit.
The system in Ireland is run that the top 10% in each club will get to go on and compete in the next round of qualifiers for the national team the following year , this is called the Master Angler and is held in a different province each year . The top 6 out of over 120+ anglers over the three competitions in the Master Angler get to go on to the "fish-offs".
There they will make up a panel of the best 40 anglers in the country who have mostly qualified by other avenues, for example the previous years' team will be there.
If you come in the first few (top 5 I think?) in that series of comps you will not only be a well earned International Team Member but in my mind will practically have supernatural powers or have sold your soul to the devil! :-)
It takes dedication and consistency over the club season just to earn those master angler positions in WCAD let alone go on through the different rounds to make the Irish team .
WCAD will have 3 places for the master angler this season and none of them will be easily won, but on the flip side those anglers who do get through will be well prepared by the process.
I'm gonna stick my neck out here and predict that WCAD will have at least one member at the World Championships in Holland this October, infact I won't be a bit surprised if we have more than one! Now that would be some going for a small local club !

I guess you're wondering "what has all this got to do with bass fishing ?" Well I'm told bass is going to be one of the main target species at the World Championships and this should give Ireland , Wales and England an advantage as our team members should be as good at catching them as anyone and in all conditions?
They probably won't be favourites though , the amount of times I've read that the French are the best/most advanced bass anglers in Europe ? and also the fact that they are defending champions should put them in that position .
Either way I do hope bass feature strongly in the catches and we will all have an interest in this years competition .
Well, except for anglers who may look down their noses at bait fishermen ........
If your not one of them it might be worth considering joining a local angling club, aswell as getting you through tough and sometimes bass-less winters, it will definately improve your range of skills and ...... who knows where it might take you ? !Danny Wysehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02250212598450996634noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5359809161017631911.post-36263114651904353472012-03-29T23:53:00.000-07:002012-03-29T23:53:30.078-07:00Bass en masseLoads of sub 4lb bass around the West Cork (and probably East too?) coast at the moment . Easterly winds , neap tides and bass all over the place.
Its been so mild (hot !) for this time of year and the fish have responded . Its going home once you've caught 10 kind of fishing , a bit like shooting fish in a barrel, too easy, but blows the cobwebs off nicely.
Normally the bigger fish wouldn't start showing till the second half of April at the earliest , I'll be keeping an eye on that situation this year. 2012 has really started well lets hope it continues , Happy Bassing.
He dug ten lug and a clam as he'd planned to do a bit of lure fishing then switch to bait as darkness came on. February can be hit and miss on the lures with bait more reliable into the surf.
Making a few casts with his shallowfeed ,now re-armed with single hooks, he thought he could feel fish swiping/hitting at the lure but wasn't positive as he was out of practice.
Sure enough the rod buckled over and let him know his hunch was correct as he landed a 4lb bass in great condition.
After a few more casts he clipped on a komomo and caught and released 5 more fish including one of 5lb to round off a great hours winter lure fishing . All 6 of them were nice and fat and he was delighted as we finished our phone call , his bait now cast out , would there be more to come?

I'd better get my act together and have a look with the lure rod myself this weekend.Danny Wysehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02250212598450996634noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5359809161017631911.post-81898995090077993052012-01-28T03:45:00.000-08:002012-01-28T04:25:08.327-08:00Irish sport fishing dot com.I'm enjoying this site , it's informative and has good variety and pictures.
http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0165783608001781

If you have a habit of getting hooks stuck in your hand maybe you could consider crushing the barbs , also swapping the trebles for singles and rubberised landing nets can help in this regard.
Its been debated many times and is currently on topic again on WSF , it will probably always be a contentious issue I suppose?Danny Wysehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02250212598450996634noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5359809161017631911.post-35554509860312151042012-01-19T03:33:00.000-08:002012-01-21T03:39:50.304-08:00Bass fishing in Cork 2011,..........well from my point of view anyway. Reflecting on 2011 it actually suprises me how good the bass fishing was through the winter months of Jan, Feb and March . Given the severity of the winter and the below average temperatures we experienced in Cork, "bass lore" would have you believe that the fish would move off to deeper water and stay there until spring. Here they would find a more stable temperature uneffected by icy cold water run-off from the land and convection cooling from the shoreline.
If they did move off-shore it would seem they didn't move too far because any time a low pressure with onshore winds came through the bass came with those winds, and fed heartily in the surf tables. Those in the know were making great catches mostly while bait-fishing and I'm not just talking about shool fish here. Specimens were turning up around the coast with lures also taking the odd fish , a 15lber was the pick of the bunch taken in Cork Harbour .

"Bass lore" or the general beliefs about bass fishing have only ever served to hinder my catch-rate and I prefer to generally ignore them nowadays , by example easterly winds and the smallest neap tides gave us very good fishing on numerous occassions last season, the type of fishing that I get bored and pack in because the fish are too easy to catch.
If that sounds like a load of bull' I can assure you its not , numbers of fish don't impress me much anymore, size and difficulty of catch (new venues etc) have far greater value to me. If I'm catching a fish every few casts , 10 fish is more than enough to satisfy me and I just stop fishing or move to new ground.
I'll get onto "bass lore" again in another blog as its a big subject in itself . I will say though that if you want to improve your catch rate and knowledge this season ignore the traditional beliefs about bass fishing and just get out there and go for it . You'll learn far more than you will waiting for that perfect tide, with a SSW breeze and a setting newmoon etc, and you'll catch more for the season aswell.

Lures started to take fish on a more regular basis from mid March in 2011 , I'm still not sure whether that was down to the fish or the anglers, a bit of both possibly?but my records show this date onwards was when finally the lures started to seriously compete with bait .
April out-performed all expectations with higher numbers of fish in the 5-7lb bracket turning up amongst catches and super fishing to be found , towards the end of the month it was like the shoreline was carpeted in decent bass and I revelled in covering new ground , the fishing was easy.

Unfortunately May didn't stick to the script and the two weeks up to the start of the closed season, on the 15th ,were tough going. High winds and a drop in temperature made sure we really had to work hard to pick up a few fish.
When the closed season was finished mid June the weather was settled and fishing was good , surface lures were very popular with the fish, happy days!...........:-)
July and August were challenging enough ,but a new approach Julian and I had developed kept us in the fish and our numbers were up on the same period from 2010. That particular season (2010) had been exceptional and even relative novices had found the fishing easy through the summer.
High summer 2011 was back to normal in my experience , lots of food about, the fish well fed and not that interested in chasing your lure about the place. Thinking outside of the box was called for , past successes meant nothing .Some people were moaning on the internet, others were out catching doubles .Two were caught in my area on the same day ,the 18th of Aug .
The much waited for month of September came roaring in bringing with it disappointment . A top month in "bass lore" , it was made a mockery of by strong onshore winds . Lure-fishing was impractical until the latter half of the month. Even then September never lived up to its "reputation" as I think the fish had fed so well during and after the rough weather. I still enjoyed taking fish on lures and live-eels but it wasn't a patch on April !
By October my attentions were elsewhere. Weeks before this month I had lost my lure box while jumping in to rugby tackle a bass that had snapped off at my feet. I retrieved my lure from its mouth and sent it on its way , little did I know my lure box had fallen out of the back pack and was following it out to sea. It hurts to lose one 25 euro lure, a box full of them is another matter. I had also snapped my first ever rod playing a very big fish in the swell. I was getting a bit annoyed with it all and was glad to have a break and concentrate on match fishing and the Master Angler 2011 in lovely county Sligo.
October though was generally like November in that if the conditions were suitable the fish were about and feeding. Neither Julian or I fished much through what can be the best time of year for big fish, but when we did it was fairly good, unfortunately our enthusiasm had waned a bit.
Ditto December , bass were about and taking lures when conditions were good, and munching on baits intended for cod in all conditions. We didn't get the sub-zero month that was forecast and if it stays that way into 2012 the baby bass from the spring of '11 will have a good chance of surviving and keeping our year round fishery in good shape.
Good luck for the coming year and as I said if you fancy wetting a line just get out there and do it , ignore the rule book.Danny Wysehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02250212598450996634noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5359809161017631911.post-85338740931993525822012-01-15T09:02:00.000-08:002012-01-16T01:09:07.959-08:00Funny Endorsement.I had a good laugh yesterday, a friend of mine gave me a dozen copies of "Sea Angler" to have a read of.
I found an advertisement in a copy from the company "Italia Fishing", talking about the Alcedo Aluminum Pro spinning reel, they use the headine ;

"Currently in use by many of the top bass anglers in the UK such as Danny Wise of Jersey Bass Guides and Julian Smith of Kinsale Bass Guides in Ireland."

Besides the obvious mistakes in the advert that made us laugh , I just want to put on record that,
"Julian and I do not endorse or recommend the use of equipment sold by Italia Fishing".

We gave some of it a try :-(
Nice guy who runs the company but thats that for us.

Back to the fishing,........the high temperatures we are getting this winter have been very welcome considering the last two winters we've had . Plenty of bass are getting caught on bait at the moment and even the odd ray is still picking up baits intended for cod .
If the mild weather continues the bass will probably stay close to shore and good fishing should be found through february and march when the conditions are suitable.Danny Wysehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02250212598450996634noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5359809161017631911.post-78985284931074283902011-12-11T12:39:00.000-08:002011-12-12T02:08:35.574-08:00Poachers , Cod and Lifeboats.Apologies readers, I haven't been posting much lately and the truth is I've only been fishing twice in the last month or so. Both of those outings were to target cod for the table aswell ,so I haven't had my finger on the pulse as regards the bass fishing lately.
I've heard of some big ones getting caught but can't confirm any particular catches. We've had a decent run of cod here lately and with all the catch and release of the slow growing bass through the year its been nice to bring home some fresh cod, as I do enjoy eating seafood. Ofcourse I've no problem with anyone keeping a bass for the table I just personally prefer to keep the faster growing species of fish to eat if I can. I get more of a buzz catching bass than eating them.
Apologies also to you guys who have left comments without reply. Every time I've tried I couldn't get it to work (I'm no computer whizz thats for sure) but now it seems I have it sussed so won't be ignoring your comments in future.

Some of my spare time has been taken up with volunteering for the Kinsale Lifeboat boat crew and I've been enjoying the comradery of the lads and ladies involved in the boat crew, shore crew and the fund raising team. The training is of the highest standard and for me very stimulating. It is a big commitment but I hope to become an integral part of the team and give something back to the community over the next decade or so. Even though I've years of experience on the water I never saw myself joining the RNLI , that was for "other people", but we all change as we grow and I'm delighted to be involved now , I'm sure it will become a big part of my life.

Travelling at speed out to "shouts" in force 6's and 7's at night or day will test the knees and back of anyone to the limit. The retirement age of 45 on inshore lifeboats as opposed to 55 on the bigger all-weather lifeboats is a reflection of the working environment . If you can stay in good shape, a medical each year after retirement age can prolong your service. "Going with it" I'm told is the key to protecting the body (trickier at night when you can't see the next wave too well) . So far so good, but bigger tests to come , its a good job I love the sea.

On a more serious note ,and I'm a bit late with this, but please watch out for bass poachers this time of year and especially in the East Cork/Ballycotton area . Big catches may be landed into harbours or even quiet coves for export to France by unscrupulous fish buyers. With prices for fish rising this time of year, plenty of darkness to operate in and lots of bass about these people cash in on this seasonal bonanza . The fisheries boys are too understaffed to keep watch on these activities and the poachers are sneaky ,so its up to us anglers to try and get some information together that may help lead to a prosecution.
Targetting the buyers is the way to go in my view as if there is no market there will be no poaching. With catches of a dozen boxes and more at times, its obvious that this is no restaraunt back door operation , to shift large quantities of illegal bass you need good contacts and people in the fish business have good contacts!

If any of you have any info regarding poaching please email me at d_jwyse@yahoo.co.uk , thanks.Danny Wysehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02250212598450996634noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5359809161017631911.post-10592096033411735532011-11-17T10:10:00.000-08:002011-11-18T00:45:49.607-08:00Lure , bait , lure , bait ?? With the weather conditions very changeable the last month or so, it's been good practice to keep tactics changeable aswell .
Once the gales have passed and the water given enough time to clear up some great lure fishing has been found. Marauding groups of fish in the 5-8lb bracket have been roaming the shoreline in some pretty big surf. Catches of 4 or 5 fish in an hours fishing have been made by us with hard plastics taking their fancy.
The feed shallow has been doing the business aswell........no suprises there!

Ofcourse the water hasn't always been suitable for lure fishing so we've also been dusting down the bait rods.

"Bait fishing after a big blow can be good" .
That is the common accepted theory and in fairness it quite often is . I think though ,a lot of the time "after the blow" is too late and the bigger fish have already come inshore with the weather ,had a feed and gone again.
There are usually plenty of smaller (sub 5lb) bass about after the main event and they can often be fussy over bait type ,with slow gentle bites and lots of dropped hooks, they may have a lot of food to choose from ?
If you can find the right spots to fish safely and have suitable tackle to use, some exciting fishing can be found "during" the main blow. This is especially so if the weather has been relatively calm beforehand.
It's not comfortable , there is no finesse about it and its not easy to drag a mate along with you ,F-that being the common answer, but a big bait on a pennel rig can find you some big fish this time of year.
I'm talking about the type of weather when any thoughts of going lure fishing are just ludicrous, unless LRF in the harbours floats your boat , which it does for many and is probably a good bit of fun.

I prefer to take 2 or 3 clams and a few lugworms hooked and bound onto a pair of 4/0 to 6/0 hooks , or squid , mackeral , crabs , whatever takes my fancy aslong as it's big. Lob it out into the seething mass and remind myself of the virtues of patience ,2 rods helps with the patience bit as it keeps you busy but can also be a pain at times. Takes I find are very positive in these conditions , they just pick it up and run . I've had from schoolies up to fish around the 8lb mark already this year so that size of bait isn't too selective. Generally the average size of fish is good though and for me it beats watching the forecast and moaning .

Neither Julian or I have "landed" a double yet this year and with only a matter of weeks to go its not looking too promising , tis always one of the season's targets . Quantity this year has been better than last year, and thats pleasantly suprising given 2010 was an excellent season, but we've had to work a lot harder for our fish this year. I'll wait till newyear before making the full report on 2011.

Thanks must go to Minister Simon Coveney for making the good decision to keep protecting our favourite fish .
Marine morgages and diesel bills, thats where the money would have gone from the sale of a decimated bass stock , the crew man would have seen little money to spend in his community , bankers and oil companies missed out there, thank god............. well actually no , thank John Quinlan and his associates.
Also well done to everyone else who helped in the fight, you know who you are, our unity, strength and efforts have won through for now , and we can sleep a little easier until the commercial sector mounts the next challenge........................ Now back to fishing ,whats the weather forecast saying? :-)
This competition decides the captain of the Irish team and puts 10 anglers through to the "fish off" which decides the final 4 other places in the team and 1 reserve.
As many of you will know Ireland are the current World Champions and the standard here at the moment doesn't get any higher, anywhere.
Four of us travelled up from our club West Cork and District SAC , Paudie O'Driscoll , Stephen O'Donovan , myself and Derek Kendrick who was a member of that World Championship winning team which won in South Africa last year.
A fifth member of our club ,JP Molloy the captain of that WC team would also be heading up fresh from coming 2nd in the Irish pairs in Kerry the weekend before.

The event was held in Sligo and there was three 4 hour competitions held over 2 days which covered 6 different beaches and around a hundred miles of coast line . Once you had drawn your three envelopes out of the three boxes at the opening ceremony, along with the other 125 anglers, you knew your peg numbers, zones and what beaches they would be on.

To some it's a weekend away to be enjoyed even though it takes a year of matches to qualify for this chance.
A few pints , a bit of rugby on the box and a chance to catch up with familiar faces and old adversaries, while enjoying a spot of fishing against the beautiful back drop of the Sligo coastline .
To us four (and JP) we only had one thing on our minds , the top ten of the leader board . Consistency was key over the three matches , a poor result in any match and your chance was blown.

"Fail to prepare, prepare to fail" as one famous Cork man puts it.
In our case this involved a lot of hard work collecting , 40 king rag , 1000 maddies , 150 lugworm and dozens of peeler crabs each just for starters .Throw in shellfish , sandeel , mackeral ,salted black wraps and you're starting to have enough bait for 12 hours match fishing.
Will you use it all ? not a hope , but you have to cover all possibilities as you don't even know whether you're fishing a beach or an estuary at this stage?
Aswell as collecting the bait it has to be kept in tip-top condition , tricky enough in a vehicle over three days!

If any of you lure only guys are still reading I can imagine your thoughts :-).

With an 80 kilometre drive to the first match watching the rugby (Ireland v Wales) in the morning lost its priority status, it was breakfast then hit the road.
Enniscrone that first venue greeted us with a lively surf and plenty of kelp washing around , luckily we were able to drive on the beach because I was pegged right at the top end .The match would be from 10am-2pm.

I started with a flapper rig and the 6oz pyramid leads I chose to use let the rig trundle slowly through the surf from right to left . I baited with maddies or crab and lug tipped with maddies and fished with 30lb mono straight through as I didn't want to waste time dealing with lots of weed stuck on a leader knot.
My first cast produced a double shot of flounders, to the envy of those around me, and the heavy mono tactic was working well. I could confidently retrieve the gear without worry about the mainline parting under the weight off the kelp, unhook the trace, slide off any weed and be back in the water while those around were still struggling with their leader knots.
The flounders kept coming in and I have to admit it was a great buzz . The guys around me were getting the odd one now and again but it was clear I was doing well.

By the last cast the buzz had turned to mild horror as the water had reached the back wheels of my van , moving higher up the beach wasn't an option either as the sand was too soft . I just managed to get the gear into the van and get moving with a push from one of the lads . My nerves were shredded at this point and thoughts of losing the van (the tide still had 2 hours till high) were running through my head as I slalomed my way back down the beach , zig-zagging between rod stands , vehicles and anglers while trying not to stop the van .

By the time the four of us met up I'd calmed down a bit and was able to enjoy the fact that I'd caught 13 flounders and was in the top 5 in my zone. The other three lads had done well enough too and we left that venue in high spirits.
JP had had a bad first session and hit the road back to Cork ,6 hours away .He must have been wrecked/fished-out from the Diawa pairs as he's one of the best anglers in the country but had failed to bag-up when there was plenty of fish in his zone?

There was no time to rest as we had a long drive to the next venue Streedagh , for a 6pm-10pm session, we ate food as we drove. I felt great and for a few hours I was able to dream of maybe getting myself into the top ten and maybe even the Irish team..............?

I was pegged at the far end of this beach aswell and the walk with seatbox, beach buddy, coolbox , rods , rod stand and bucket full of crabs was as gruelling as any walk I'd ever done before. As it was raining the water proofs had to be worn which didn't help matters, they just made me boiling hot. I was exausted ! there was no two ways about it.
Fish short was the general consensus , for coalies and flats. In the first couple of casts two flounder were caught a few pegs up from me and conditions looked perfect, we were all looking forward to the action that would surely happen once it got dark.
Those two flats turned out to be the only two fish caught at our end of the beach for the whole competition!
We fished short , long , crept with the gear , every conceivable bait was used but it all came back in as perfectly presented as it went out , there wasn't even any crabs to have a go , it was a dead zone!
A blank was looming and the dream slipping away , any couple of fish would have kept me in with a chance after my good start but it wasn't to be.
I didn't feel as bad as I probably should have? so much effort had gone into getting here but the fact that all around me failed to find any fish was some sort of solace.

When I finally made it back to the van it was disappointing to tell the lads I'd blanked , thankfully they had done better and were still in the mix otherwise spirits would have been low. I knew I would be driving back in the morning as my chance was gone and fishing the last competition was pointless, I was also out of energy.

In the last comp the lads kept it going and Derek finished well in his zone and in 4th place over-all on the final leader board, he's a brilliant angler and it was no suprise to any of us , the guy just has a knack for finding fish and his gold medal is proof of that fact.
We were also delighted that Stephen had finished in 6th spot on the leader board, his consistency over the three comps has got him a well deserved place in the fish-offs and I wish both the lads the very best of luck in that.
Paudie fished a stormer on the last comp winning his zone and catching more fish than anyone in any zone. Infact during the whole tournament he collected the 5th highest amount of fish points! Unfortunately though his night session on Streedagh had been nearly as bad as mine. The couple of fish he caught were just not enough on the night and he paid for that in the end , finishing a respectfull 28th over-all but a cruel quirk of the format when taking his fish points into account. He will be back though , I've no doubt about that.
Species landed over the weekend included turbot, flounder, whiting, dogs, seatrout(not counted), mullet and probably a few more that I can't confirm yet.

On reflection it was damn hard work , the bait gathering , the hours on the road and the consistent effort fishing and walking .
I knew I was a bit out of my league before I went , it was my first and possibly the only time I'll have a crack at making the fish-offs. The lads with me are very experienced match anglers and that definately helps having fished the Masters before. On hindsight I would have spent a lot more time fishing at distance in my last comp instead of waiting/expecting the fish to come feeding inshore soon. I will take these experiences forward with me now and I'm pretty sure they will improve my match angling in the long run.

Congratulations to Martin Howlin from Wexford who won over-all and is now the new captain of the Irish team .

I haven't tried for bass in weeks and am looking forward to some proper fishing again :-).............Danny Wysehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02250212598450996634noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5359809161017631911.post-16284748658827989122011-09-26T05:17:00.000-07:002011-09-26T13:25:01.259-07:00Float-fishing Soft Plastics. We've all been there, you turn up to fish your chosen mark and find yourself confronted by the anglers enemy, WEED !

At times it can be impossible to fish conventional methods , even weedless rigged lures can be covered in seconds leaving you no option but to walk away or wait until the weed has past.

One method I use ,for situations like these and also for fishing in clean water, is float-fishing with lures.

I like to rig up using a pike float(though most floats will work fine), bead ,a bullet weight, a strong piece of mono 25 lb+ (as it needs to be able to handle a bit of wear) and a couple of swivels .
Tie a swivel to one end of the mono, slide on the bead, then the float coloured end first. Next slide on the bullet weight and tie on the last swivel.
The whole rig is about a foot or 30 centimetres long and can easily be stored in a container in the lure bag, ready to be attached onto your lure-clip and thus avoiding the hassle of making it up at the venue.
All you have to do now is make up the business end and tie it to the swivel that supports the bullet weight. This is best done at the venue when water depth and conditions have been taken into consideration.
In very clear water I will use an 8lb Airflow flourocarbon hook length about 5 feet or 150 centimetres long . I don't generally add any shot to this but if the tide and wind were going in the same direction, or the float was just travelling very fast, I might add a few to keep the lure down. I prefer to leave off the weight though, so the lure can move with more freedom.
Choice of lure is something I would encourage you to experiment with as different venues and situations will favour different lures and only you can work out what suits your marks best. Just to get you started though ,a natural looking soft plastic like the smaller Slug-go will behave well in the water and takes fish.

One of my customers Cuan playing a bass ten minutes after I'd rigged him up with a float and lure, and showed him what to do.He was pretty impressed at the time.

If you're fishing off rocks or wading on sand into an estuary, casting uptide and letting the float carry the lure down past you until it stops and swings in, can be the best approach . Retrieve it slowly ready for the next cast, you never know what might follow ?
If its very weedy cast into a clear patch of water and the float and lure will travel at the same speed as the weed. This will help to prevent the lure getting clogged up until it stops and the weed catches up.
It will also flow with the water like a natural bait might ,getting sucked into eddies and currents that form in the band of water infront of you and hopefully on to waiting bass.
If there is a chop on the water it will work the lure making it flutter up and down, while travelling in the current.
Some venues you can walk along with the float , "trotting" it for long distances until you find fish.
On clean ground you can also rig a lure to be trundled along the bottom , the float will dip as the lure hits a ripple or bank in the sand but will then pop back up and keep floating on working the lure behind it .
There are so many possibilities with this method from using shrimp lures on the bottom, to paddle tail shads raced through strong current near the surface, it just takes some use of the grey matter to design a hook length/trace to suit your venues unique geography.

This fish took the small slug-go on my first cast fishing on an open surf beach .

I offered this technique to a journalist, to use as an article, before, as it can be a very good method at times and is something different from the norm? As I recently wrote Cast, Retrieve, Remove the weed , Cast,Retrieve,............................ well you know it by now, can get boring at times too.
Shame it didn't come off because they would have made a much better job of it than I have here .
Anyway you guys get the gist of things, ..........float fishing might not be for everyone and I'm not going to say its a killer technique. At certain times it works well and, as I've said, a float plunging under the water does it for me.

Danny Wysehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02250212598450996634noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5359809161017631911.post-5683096502459616572011-09-19T02:41:00.000-07:002011-09-19T03:02:32.523-07:00Rounding off with a bit of variety. The wind stayed offshore for the weekend so I managed to squeeze in another couple of sessions.
My favourite one was plugging into the waves on a surf beach . Anyone who has done a bit of bait fishing into the surf knows that the rhythmic pounding of the waves can put you into a state of mild meditation.
Lure fishing the surf doesn't quite allow you to switch off in the same way but it still eases the mind and a lack of snags makes for a very relaxed angling experience.

Covering the features in the formation of the sand on the beach including banks , drop-offs and gullies created by run-off or streams was keeping me occupied but after more than an hour had passed I was beginning to doubt my prospects .
Suddenly though the lure was hit two or three times in quick succession but no firm bend was registered on the rod. I stopped winding and could imagine the shallow diver I was using rising to the surface while being pushed around by the moving water hopefully imitating a stunned bait-fish , it induced another take and this time the rod let me know the fish was hooked .
With the fish easily 60 yards out from me, it used the waves to aid its movement reaching ferocious speeds as it kited from one side on a long run, then turning and heading back again. Often its silver and gold flank would be visible travelling along the face of the peeling wave , its dorsal fin cutting through the waters surface as it powered along . It was a delight I have to say and all this from what we'd call a small bass over here at around 3 lbs or so.
Two more fish around the same size were landed during the next half hour , then the dreaded mobile phone called me away just as my anticipation levels had reached fever pitch , just aswell maybe ? I'd gone from nice and relaxed to heart pounding with excitement . Years and years of bass fishing and it still gets the pulse racing !
Even though it wasn't outstanding when sizes and numbers of fish are taken into consideration , it was still one of my favourite sessions of the season so far , something different venue-wise than the norm I suppose ?

I rounded off the weekend on more familiar territory with a couple more fish taken off the rocks into nicely fizzing water.
Apologies for the boring photos , I don't have a "Henry Gilbey" standing around ready to use his magic when needed and I don't like keeping the fish out of water for timed shots , so its a quick point and shoot and get the bass back in.

This fish, number 10 from the last few days, took a fancy to the 7.5 inch slug-go creapt through the rough ground and like the one pictured above , it hit the lure a few times without hooking up ,it was only by pausing that I managed to persuade it to really grab the lure properly thus ensuring it a photo opportunity.

So we got a break from the wind but 10 bass over a few days in September is not great fishing , you'd be hoping for those kind of numbers a day usually.
It's said that after a blow is the best time to go fishing but I'd say if the wind has been blowing hard for a long time then most bass have already eaten well by the time it calms down.
I look out to sea watching that seething mass of coloured water and often think to myself , those bass must be gorging themselves on worms , shellfish and anything else that is unlucky enough to stray into their paths.Danny Wysehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02250212598450996634noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5359809161017631911.post-78037143267877554562011-09-16T02:03:00.000-07:002011-09-16T02:18:31.350-07:00Break in the weather atlast. So we had a bit of a blow over here and fishing was put on hold while we kept an eye on the forecast.
One good thing the bad weather did over the spring tides was dump large quantities of kelp on the high tide line.
With a week or so of rotting time it could make for some decent angling opportunities when the weed gets lifted again on the next spring tides, with all those maggots , hoppers and slatters creating a natural feast. Ofcourse thats if its not blowing a total hoolie again.

Julian was fly-fishing down in Kerry and over the two days that himself and two others managed to get out 25 seatrout and 2 salmon were landed between them ,with many other fish evading the net. All in all they were very pleased considering the conditions.

I myself ventured out once the wind gave us a break back here in Cork. I gambled by taking the dog (short haired border collie)with me as a new fishing companion. He must be a lucky mascot though as I found some satisfying fishing .
His desire to lick the bass made it tricky keeping him out of the picture.
I float-fished some live sandeel for the first time this year and my lack of practice showed as I missed plenty of takes and lost a few fish that looked like they were coming ashore. I wasn't in the slightest bit put out by this as it was such a joy just to be out fishing again, as many of you will also know having been stuck indoors aswell.
They didn't all get the better of me and I also managed to lure a few fish on a paddle tail shad , while plugs, slug-go's and other softs were ignored by the fish ?
Final tally was 5 bass landed around the 3-4lb size range , another day I would of landed a dozen as it was hectic action from the off, but I'm certainly not complaining at missing a few fish. There's always the next time the weather breaks ???
Danny Wysehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02250212598450996634noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5359809161017631911.post-85092226077770514072011-09-13T03:21:00.000-07:002011-09-13T03:43:18.202-07:00Grip Shit.Thankfully the wind has dropped as we're halfway through September already and not a great deal of fishing has been done by ourselves.
Saying that Julian nearly landed a 12lbish salmon yesterday but his braid parted after the fish found a snag , ofcourse this was not until the fish had leapt out of the water right in front of him just to wind him up!
He's in Waterville for the week with a group over from Scotland and as can happen they've been unlucky with the weather so far, hopefully conditions will improve for them now.

The last time I fished was when I caught the bass in the last post, luckily another angler was there to take the photo and it was a nice picture. The reason I mention this though is the said angler had a fish grip with him and offered to hold and weigh the fish for me during and after hook removal .
I have never used one before and watched with interest at the process.
Now I haven't always looked after fish perfectly in the past but I do make more effort nowadays , one thing I will not be doing is buying a fish grip though ! I was horrified at the damage done to the inside of the fishes mouth by the hard stainless steel , F'me they are some torture device ! Now maybe this was a rare occurrence but the grooves literally torn into the inside of the lower jaw were bad . It was a fine fish in its prime but the use of that implement did nothing to help its prospects on release.
A pair of forceps are all you need for handling hooks around lively fish , I've managed just fine without any fish grip so far and am satisfied that atleast I've been doing something right by not using these contraptions in the past .

Now time to get back to fishing .................Danny Wysehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02250212598450996634noreply@blogger.com0
